In her continuing role as UN Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson took to the stage yesterday morning at the World Economic Forum for an update on the fantastic HeForShe campaign. She announced the next stage of the program, IMPACT 10X10X10, which is going to work with pre-existing bodies, from governments to businesses and universities, to change their structures in order to be geared towards promoting gender equality. On top of that, Watson’s speech highlighted the personal responsibility that we each have in standing up for gender equality in our everyday lives.
“I spoke about some of my story in September,” she said. “What are your stories? Girls, who have been your mentors? Parents, did you make sure you treated your children equally? If so, how have you done it? Husbands, have you been supporting your female partner privately so that she can fulfill her dreams, too? Young men, have you spoken up in a conversation when a woman was casually degraded or dismissed? How did this affect you?”
It’s a great reminder at the start of the year that each and every one of us has a continuing part to play in gender equality. If only things were like in Hogwarts, and a wave of a magic wand or a swig of a potion could make things better! Take a look at Emma in action:
