Gender Fluid is the New Black: 5 Icons Redefining Gender Today

“Gender fluid” has become a trending catchphrase, one that, in less than a year, has penetrated pop culture and finally given voice to the once voiceless. While people who identify themselves as gender fluid are not necessarily also transgender, each have legitimized/empowered the other, and together have begun dismantling archaic attitudes and given birth to a brave new world of gender without limitations.

Here is a list of today’s gender fluid/transgender trailblazers.

1. Ruby Rose

“For the most part, I definitely don’t identify as any gender. I’m not a guy; I don’t really feel like a woman, but obviously I was born one.”

The 29 year-old Australian actress, model, DJ, recording artist, and TV presenter Ruby Rose defines herself by neither gender and came out at age 12. Having first garnered attention in Australia in a teenage girls magazine modelling competition (Girlfriend), Rose recently captured international audiences with her portrayal of the sarcastic and striking Stella Carlin in Netflix’s OITNB.

2. Caitlin Jenner

Retired athlete and former spouse of Kris Jenner, this year, Caitlin Jenner transitioned from man to woman. Although controversial, Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover will go down in history as the symbol of mainstream pop-culture media finally embracing the transgender community at large.

The 22 year-old singer Miley Cyrus is an advocate for gender fluidity and is also bisexual. “I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with.” Like ‘er or hate ‘er, Miley’s down.

“It is revolutionary for a trans person to choose to be seen and visible in a world that tells us we should not exist.”

The 31 year-old actress and LGBT advocate Laverne Cox won the hearts of OITNB audiences with her memorable portrayal of transgender character Sophia Burset. Subsequently, Cox became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the acting category, and the first to be nominated for an Emmy Award since composer/musician Angela Morley in 1990. A social media crusader, Cox introduced the trending hashtag #transisbeautiful.

“It seems to me that gender ought to be one of those things one waits to find out until that moment when intimacy is imminent; or preferably, occurring. After all, it isn’t anyone’s GD business what gender is being expressed otherwise, because it’s irrelevant to 99% of situations. Anyone uncomfortable with that schedule seems to me, at least, to be limiting themselves and their opportunities to get to know another human being for who they are-excepting their gender expression- while being accepting of that individual’s gender expression. Besides, it’s wrong to post boundaries on the other person’s right to personal expression of identity; that oughta be a crime.”

Kaitlyn Jenner isn’t gender fluid, Miley Cyrus isn’t gender fluid, Laverne Cox isn’t gender fluid,Come on try harder

  • Alex says:

Hold on. You say Ruby Rose doesn’t identify as female or male but you use she/her pronouns for them? Come on. Caitlyn Jenner identifies as female. That’s transgender, not genderfluid. Miley Cyrus, also, isn’t genderfluid. They said that they are gender neutral and pansexual, not bisexual. i found that out in roughly five minutes tops, it’s not actually that hard. Again, with Laverne, transgender- not genderfluid. I am genderfluid. Whoever wrote this has no idea what being genderfluid is.
