At 81, the intrepid comedic legend, Joan Rivers passed away at 1.17pm in New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital. River’s daughter, Melissa Rivers, included in her statement: “My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
Following a difficult throat surgery one week ago, Rivers never awoke from the induced coma.
The world first noticed Rivers in 1965 when she made a guest appearance on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show. Rivers made such a spark that night that The Tonight Show adopted her comedic style of sending up celebrities and Hollywood vanity. Rivers, who’s legal name is Joan Alexandra Rosenberg, acknowledged Carson as her mentor, yet when she launched her own rival show, The Late Show, Carson never spoke to her again. Whilst her satirical style of humor (which included ridiculing her excessive plastic surgery ventures) was sometimes criticized, Rivers won a Daytime Emmy for “Outstanding Talk Show Host” for The Joan Rivers Show.
Rivers also excelled at stand-up comedy and in 1994 won a Tony Award for her performance in Sally Marr…and her escorts.
A revolutionary figure for female comedians, celebrities and fans across the globe have outpoured their respect and condolences on social media.
