Perhaps the most influential female artist of all time, Kate Bush, is back on top!
The experimental nature of Bush’s music means her songs alternate between rock, classical, pop, art-rock, and folk, and captivates the listener by taking them on a journey through a magical and haunting world.
No one could ever significantly compare any artist to the overall idiosyncrasy of Bush, but consider Tori Amos, Goldfrapp, Bat for Lashes, Feist, and Florence Welch, amongst others, who if not for Bush paving the way with her wild, theatrical performance, would not have found their own musical distinctiveness.
Even now, Bush continues to make waves in music land. Returning to the stage 35 years after retiring from live performances, Bush has made history by being the first female artist to have eight albums in UK’s Official Albums Chart at the same time. The only artists to beat out Bush are Elvis Presley and The Beatles.
It was back in 1979 that she became the first female artist to score a UK number one single on the Official Singles Chart with the self-penned “Wuthering Heights.” This song, released when Bush was just 19, “gave the industry a new idea about the power of feminine music.”
Now at the age of 56, Bush still knows how to excite and mesmerize the crowd. If you were lucky enough to score a ticket to one of her “Before the Dawn” shows, tell us your highlights! In the meantime, here’s the video for the killer “Wuthering Heights.”
