Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ frontwoman Karen O is possibly one of the coolest women in music. And now, after 15 years of fronting the New York indie rock band (bet that makes you feel old) she’s releasing her first solo material, an album called Crush Songs, which is due to be released September 9 on Julian Casablancas’ label Cult Records. According to a statement she released earlier this week, it was a collection of songs written in her late 20’s. “When I was 27 I crushed a lot,” O explained in the scrawled note. “I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.” Crush Songs will at first be released as a special edition vinyl “incorporating Karen’s own personal drawings, handwritten lyrics and more,” before being available on CD and digitally.
The video to her debut solo single “Rapt” has now been unveiled. With the track itself as a lo-fi bedroom recording reminiscent of a stripped-back early Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the video features Karen in vibrant red couture under dreamy, sparkling waters. The video was directed by Karen’s husband Barney Clay and production was designed by K.K. Barrett, who worked with Karen on the “psycho opera” Stop The Virgins and was nominated for an Oscar in Best Production Design for Her. Check out the video below:
