Mixtape Fridays

This week’s mixtape comes from the Berlin-based, Aussie songstress, Phia. Ever since she uploaded her track “Do You Ever?” to her Soundcloud page in late 2013 (listen here), it quickly racked up over 30,000 plays, been featured on MTV’s Faking It, and received regular rotation on Berlin radio. Indie Shuffle soon dubbed her “one of the most underrated of Australia’s musical exports,” and we couldn’t agree more!

Born in Melbourne, Phia studied classical and improvised piano at university, before growing restless and moving to Berlin. Anonymous and liberated, she played every small bar in the city, toting her African kalimba and loop pedal in her bicycle basket and making her “…hypnotic, joyful, [and] definitely-danceable” pop music.

Having recently performed on Australian and German TV, Phia and her producer Josh Teicher have handed over freshly recorded tracks from her soon-to-be-released debut album to be mixed by Eli Crews (US). You might have heard his work on Tune-Yards’ last two albums, as well as collaborations with Lorde, Questlove, Yoko Ono, and many more.

Phia has just started a crowdfunding campaign to help finish the album, with kalimba ring tones, looping workshops, and more are up for grabs right here.
