Write this name down: FKA twigs. She’s one of the most exciting artists in the world right now.
Tahliah Barnett, aka FKA twigs, is a 26-year-old London-based solo artist, whose musical style is an eclectic fusion of R&B, electro, funk, pop, and soul. Her weightless, slinky vocals marry perfectly with the complex electronic percussion that buildup throughout her debut album LP1 that was released early last month.
FKA twigs has a wonderfully ambitious sound that is uniquely her own. She pushes boundaries by multi-laying instrumental sounds and organically removing drums from sections of her latest track “Numbers.” The self-taught producer, director, pianist, bassist, and all round “miss-do-it-myself” is also the songwriter of the emotionally raw lyrics: “across the whole record, every single melodic line I wrote myself,” she said in a recent interview.
She may be rumored to be dating Robert Pattison, but that’s not why we will be seeing plenty of FKA Twigs in the coming months. It was announced yesterday that she’s been shortlisted for the esteemed Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year Award 2014 and she’s got a busy tour calendar. For the remainder of this year, she’ll be touring North America, the UK, and Europe, with Australian fans sitting and waiting patiently amidst rumors she’ll join The Laneway Festival tour in early 2015.
