Despite being an original story (and not a franchise film), R rated, and starring a woman, Lucy, which opened on Friday, took an impressive $44 million over its opening weekend. When showcasing beside its sword-and-sandals mythical counterpart Hercules, which wound up with just $29 million, Universal’s Scarlett extravaganza seems all the more monumental.
Having previously starred in Iron man 2, The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Johansson is no novice to the action genre. But she is the title role in Lucy, and this boast-worthy box office result has now cemented her as an action genre legend. And whilst the audience split between females and males was reportedly even, The Wrap divulges that Universal’s distribution chief Nikki Rocco said, “To have a female lead in an original property absolutely made a difference… Scarlett is a star, and her presence made it a lot more appealing for women.” This is an exciting shift in audience reception to Hollywood production: a woman in a leading role actually got the most bums on seats!
