FIRST AID KIT

Style: Folk with harmonious singing and country-influence

Members: Sisters Johanna (23) and Klara Söderberg (21)

From: Enskede, a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden

Random fact: Their father is a former member of Swedish rock pop band Lolita Pop. Their younger brother went to the same kindergarten as the daughter of Karin Dreijer Andersson, half of the Swedish electronic duo The Knife. Andersson signed them to Rabid Records, which The Knife co-owned with the condition that the record company allowed the duo to have full control over their music and album art.

STONEFIELD

Style: Alternative-rock with an underlying sense of flower power

Members: Four sisters: Amy (24), Hannah (21), Sarah (19), and Holly Findlay (16)

From: Darraweit Guim, a small town in rural Victoria, Australia

Random fact: They were uncovered by Aussie radio station Triple J in 2010 and were asked to perform at Glastonbury the following year when their ages ranged from just 13 to 21. Up until, recently their mum, and sometimes their dad, would tour with them.

TEGAN AND SARA (main pic)

Style: A beautiful marriage between pop and indie

Members: Two twins Tegan and Sara Quin (age 34)

From: Calgary, Canada

Random facts: Tegan and Sara have had a 13-year career, releasing seven studio albums. The White Stripes covered their track “Walking with a Ghost” and the girls have collaborated with DJs such as Tiesto and David Guetta.

HAIM

Style: A successful clash of the folk, rock, pop, and R&B genres

Members: Three sisters + one mister outsider: Este (28), Danielle (25), and Alana Haim (23), along with drummer Dash Hutton

From: San Fernando Valley, California, USA

Random fact: They consider Ke$ha an old friend, and their voices can be heard on tracks by A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi, Childish Gambino, and Major Lazer. The only time you’ll see Dash is when they’re performing on stage; he stays well clear of the press duties.

THE PIERCES

Style: A folky fusion of psychedelic rock-pop

Members: Two sisters Allison (age 39) and Catherine Pierce (37)

From: Birmingham, Alabama, USA

Random facts: Their song “Secret” has features in episodes of Gossip Girl, as promo for Dexter, Charmed, and Ghost Whisperer, and in the closing credits of the film ExTerminators. “Secret” is also the theme song for the TV series Pretty Little Liars. Allison and Catherine quit the music scene in 2007 but then Coldplay’s bassist Guy Berryman persuaded them to give it one last shot and co-produced their record You & I, a gold selling album in the UK.
