This year, XL Recordings turns a quarter of a century old. That’s 25 years of consistently pioneering exceptional and original music that has offered an alternative to the mainstream, from its inception in 1989 till now. The label has an impressive musical history, from starting out with bands like The Prodigy and musicians like Thom Yorke to current artists like FKA Twigs (featured on our first mixtape) and King Krule.
To celebrate, XL is releasing a compilation Pay Close Attention consisting of two discs that pays homage to their vast timeline of artists and journey as a label. Disc 1 features “underground music made for DJs” according to the label’s head Richard Russell and includes artists such as Jamie xx, Awesome 3, and Liquid, whereas Disc 2 focuses on some XL classics from “singular talents who have taken the label further than we ever envisioned” (M.I.A, Peaches, and The White Stripes to mention a few). In the press release, Russell claims that Pay Close Attention exists primarily to “show our appreciation for your support, thank you DJs. And thank you also to the retailers, writers, and, of course, ravers.”
